Reflection

My favorite project this semester was our video project in Adobe Premiere. The reason why this was my favorite project was because I’ve always been interested in video editing however, I have never dove deep into learning about it.

In the future, I do plan on making my own YouTube videos and potentially diving into film making. Even though my video didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to, I still enjoy making it, because I was able to learn how to avoid the mistakes that I made in my video. Currently, I am getting a digital technology and culture with a concentration on social media, so I envision myself being a social media content strategist, what influence me to choose this career path was one of my past classes, however learning about how influencers work helped reassure myself that the knowledge that I needed was out there to achieve my goal.  For example, throughout the whole semester everything we did was very structured and because of this I was able to understand that everything has structure in a way.

One thing I wish we had learned more about is Google ads and Facebook ads. This is because a lot of careers persist on people having these certifications when in regards to social media or even journalism. A website that helped influence me and gave me direction in my projects was 99designs.

Pando: Get Over It, Haters: 99designs Has Tipped

It has many blog posts that have to do with branding, logos and design in general. Overall I feel like the class has reassured me that my concentration for my degree (social media), is what I thought it was. Social media has created a landscape of careers for me to dive into, that can flow in many directions. This could be in advertising, blogging, influencer marketing and more. The numerous directions seem overwhelming right now, however I am just glad I can rely on not being in one place.

Final Video

For my project I decided to make a parody news broadcast, telling you what I’ve been doing since the quarantine, which is nothing. It’s not meant to take a stance or be political, it’s just supposed to be silly. I most definitely think that it’s necessary that we stay home, I just feel like with all the free time we have at home and how serious the situation is in Clark County, I feel like it’s a good idea to be silly, to distract little bit from what’s going on. I got inspiration to do this from John Krasinski’s new video series since the quarantine called Some Good News. Since he started doing it, a lot of YouTube channels have been bandwagoning this trend of making news broadcast channels, so I wanted to do the same thing. I made the intro, for another assignment previously in After Effects, so that’s how I got the news intro. I got my music from freesound.org which, I’ll make sure to link the song below. For the video, I essentially just used crossfade transitions, I almost thought it was a good idea to use graphic transitions, however when I added them in, it seemed to make the video more cheesy, which it is already sufficiently cheesy, so I stuck to the original crossfade transitions . Some trouble I ran into was trying to find good light for filming. We’ve had a lot of good light outside recently, however inside of course all of our lights in our house are a yellow color which is not good for filming. I didn’t realize this until I uploaded it to my computer and began editing, so it was a little late for me to re-film. So to overcome this I edited all the bites where I was playing the lead anchor, and just took it into the color tab in premiere and tried to mess with it’s filters and what not. Another problem I had, was communicating with my friend on how he should be filming. I feel like if I had made a better story board and more detailed it would have been a lot easier for him, but you know it was hard for me to just explain what I wanted. When I posted my video it was clear from my comments that a lot of the sound was quiet, so I took my video back into premiere and raised the volume during the actual news segments. The echo was something people had commented on, however the effect on premiere that I could use did not sufficiently get rid of it, rather it added a bit more noise which made the audio sound worse in quality. It is more audible, however it’s quality has definitely diminished.

Covid-19 on Social Media

For this assignment, I decided to do a short interview with my friend Ruby about how social media is reacting to the coronavirus. This relates to my course topic, because my whole topic is essentially talking about negativity on social media, and how we can spread more positivity. These days, social media has become a petri dish for false information and negativity, when in regards to the Coronavirus. Don’t get me wrong, as mentioned in the interview there has been a lot of positivity and support. However, it has been easy for people to become hysterical and worrisome without knowing the actual reality of the situation that we are currently dealing with. When making this, I simply grabbed a friend and asked if I could interview her for a podcast for 1 minute. When editing it, I cut out all the parts where she was repeating her points, or pausing in general. Then I went on freesound.org, and found two audio tracks. One was for the beginning to transition into my introduction. The second one, I used for my transition between my introduction and the actual interview. the links to the sound will be below. I then made the music fade in and out, both for the intro and the outro music. Some technical challenges I faced were at multiple occasions, as clear from the audio there would be some mistakes made with speech that I wouldn’t be able to edit. This could be because we were either talking too fast, or their speech wouldn’t blend in with their following sentences if edited. Another challenge I faced was finding music that would suit the interview. I didn’t want it to sound like a news report, but I also didn’t want it to be too casual so finding an in-between was acoustic country music. I feel like it sets a light tone and does blend well with the theme of my course topic, which is meant to indicate negativity, yet spread positivity. When I posted this on the discussion board I received criticism from Kara Klaus and Cody Tucker that the audio seemed to quiet and also to abrupt at times, so I had to go back into y mixdown and fix that, however otherwise i received good feedback.

Final Logo Project

Above you can see the before and after of a logo I made for a music festival that I have come up with called Peace, Life & Music. I got inspiration for doing this specific type of logo from a DTC class I took where we learned about different logos from the 70s, in regards to music festivals. For example, below is an image  that I found on Behance from Elio Moavero who made the logo for That’s 70’s Fest 2018.

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is w98vxkOXyS3oxlt__gHDFggDc__6jYautrBkl6YktSQzF6MlUPdKVmZianZe4h-LM98FI0uI_TpilvGNjtTsDkXs68UPO5YYM3Jo0cB_LTesfhvnGyG5OGrCzKuocKN8W0HCRLoX

This logo specifically is actually mimicking choices artists made in the 70s when it came to their typography, which is often warped and bubbly. So for my text I decided to go with one titled Magical Mystery Tour from 1001Fonts. https://www.1001fonts.com/magical-mystery-tour-font.html

For the objects I decided to use at first, I used the universal peace sign and heart sign to convey peace and love. I then used an acoustic guitar, to ensure the understanding that it is a music festival. Ideally as well, it would be at a venue in Portland, so I added buildings on top of the heart and made them the colors of the rainbow. I wanted the logo to represent an aspect of Portland. Specifically, the large LGBTQ community that we have in Portland; the colors are mimicking the LGBTQ flag

This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is elolXj0LUvyCvI4qQOKas8iawVPRhvFj-ZAPZE0XlUbIwgULZHJMEDbAsKIOEbUSwjdcjY1-1311eRWy54eDUJRM-nP4hYm1akvIiGZ-psg5qte2OAhMJ5itecI8n6bHw0_tdrSSAs for the tools that I utilized in illustrator. I first used the image trace tool, to trace an acoustic guitar, which can be found linked below. I then changed the coloring a bit and also added my own guitar strings, using the rectangle tool. I then traced half of a heart and then copied and reflected it to make it even. For the peace sign, I simply Image traced it from the following image, as I was finding it difficult to make on my own, while having even alignment. The image is linked below. As for the building, I simply used the rectangle tool, then colored them using the color picker.

After receiving criticism I needed to change quite a bit. One of the big things that I like about the original logo was that the layout of everything in my logo works, but the color scheme was very chaotic which made the objects not mesh together very well. So what I did to solve this problem was I took some advice from Bonnie Mcrady and found a appealing color scheme from the color wheel that Adobe has on their website to help people choose color schemes that compliment each other well. I will have the color wheel linked below. It was clear from my comments, that the detail of the guitar was not meshing well with the simplicity of the rest of the objects, so I filled in all the vectors to be the same color to act as a silhouette rather than a clear object to avoid distracting from the typography. Next the typography that I used lacked clarity and the ability to be seen from afar. So rather than just having the text just curled up in the right corner, I used the pathfinder to make a clipping into the heart for the text. Another thing that Bonnie suggested I do is mesh the peace sign and the heart together however I wanted the text to be more of a focus, because it was so out of place before, so I took the peace sign and put it in the center of the guitar to act as a soundhole. I do know that the rainbow color I chose before had significant meaning in regards to the Portland LGBTQ community, however, I felt as though it was a bit distracting from the logo, so I just added the same color scheme, to just give the logo a urban tone.
